Mary Ellen “Punky” Verne age 88 formerly of Main Street Brockway, PA; currently a resident at the DuBois Nursing Home, died on Saturday December 23, 2023. Born on July 31, 1935 in Brookville, PA; she was the daughter of the late Firl L. and Anna R. Kocher Kroh. On July 1, 1961 she was married to John E. “Moose” Verne and he preceded her in death on May 31, 2023. Punky graduated from the Brockway/Snyder Washington High School in 1953, and the Clearfield Hospital School of Nursing in 1956 where she obtained her Registered Nurse license. She then received her B.S.N. Degree from Slippery Rock State College in 1982. Punky worked all of her life as a nurse, starting at the Maple Avenue Hospital in DuBois, then the U.N.C. – Chapel Hill Burn Center, then back to the DuBois Hospital Cardiac Rehab Unit. At her retirement she was an Echo Technician at the Hospital. She enjoyed cooking, growing flowers and rescuing critters, especially cats over many many years. She also loved to spend summer vacations at Emerald Isle, NC; reading and attending her alumni class dinners. Punky is survived by a daughter Gina (Christopher) Strishock of Sandy Hook, VA; a son Lore (Virginia) Verne of Middletown, PA; sisters Judi Hebenstreit of Lenoir City, TN; Diane Conover of Knoxville, TN; brothers John (Bea) Kroh of Punxsutawney, PA; Edward (Carol) Kroh of Brockway; 2 sister-in-laws Sylvia Verne and Patricia Kroh both of Brockway; 3 grandchildren Ethan Verne, Kathleen Troxell and Austin Troxell as well as by numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and her husband she is also preceded in death by 2 brother-in-laws Michael Hebenstreit and Thomas Verne. Mass of Christian burial will be announced at a date in the future. Burial will be in St. Tobias Cemetery. Punky’s family would like to thank the staff at the DuBois Nursing Home, especially the Memory Lane Unit, Penn Highlands DuBois Hospice and the residents for all the kindness and care they provided Punky while she was a resident in their care. Memorial donations may be made to the Gateway Humane Society PO Box 678 Falls Creek, PA or any local animal shelter of your choice.
