Hazel Wingard Obituary

Hazel Lee Cornett Wingard, age 95, of Williamsburg Va., passed away peacefully with her granddaughter by her side, at her home, on the 12th of March 2026. Born on October 13th 1930 in Watauga County North Carolina, she was the daughter of Raymond and Martha (James) Cornett. After graduating from Nursing school in Norfolk Va, Hazel was commissioned in the United States Air Force. After serving out her commission, she continued as a registered nurse at several different hospitals until retirement in the early 90’s, always serving where needed but had a sentiment for pediatrics. Throughout her long life, Hazel was an enthusiastic reader who loved the library, so much so that after retirement she volunteered at the Clarion library, Clarion Pa.. She said that ”If I hadn't been called to be a nurse, I would have been a librarian”. Her greatest passion however was her Christian walk and love of God, following the teachings of Jesus. The Holy Bible was her favorite book and she could be found reading the Bible at all times during the day and night, as well as singing the wonderful hymns of old with the most beautifully gifted voice. She was a true picture of one who “prayed without ceasing”. Her dedication to the family cannot be understated. When her late husband was serving in Vietnam, she ensured her children did not go without. Juggling work with family was by no means a simple task, but she was always there for them. After retiring, she was quick to move to where she was needed. She always considered helping out with the grandchildren an enjoyable obligation.  Most of all she will be remembered for her faith, continuous intercessory prayer and dedication to God and her family. She is survived by her son Joseph, 6 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren. Hazel was preceded in death by her husband Joseph and her daughter Rita Kay.
