Hazel E. Gaston age 80 of Green Valley Road Brookville, PA; died on Friday, June 20, 2025 at Penn Highlands Jefferson Manor in Brookville. Born on December 2, 1944 in Ridgway, PA; she was the daughter of the late Irvin and Elizabeth Vandervort Deemer. Although from the same hometown, it was only after moving to Chicago Illinois following high school graduation that Hazel met the love of her life, Joseph Gaston. The two were married May 9, 1964 and continued to reside in Chicago for several years before moving home to Brookville Pennsylvania. There they worked side by side to build the log cabin where they raised their family and continued to reside for the remaining 61 years of their marriage. Friends and family were always welcome where the coffee was always brewed, the stories were always plenty, and ‘if you went away hungry it was your own fault’. She was Lutheran by faith. Retired, Hazel had been employed at the former Weibel’s Steak House in Brookville, where she took great pride in making sure the soup and salad bar was in perfect condition for the customers. She was an avid fisherman and later in life even enjoyed hunting. She found great joy observing the birds and other wildlife that frequented her yard and surrounding property. She also enjoyed jigsaw puzzles, playing cards, growing flowers, and decorating her home for whatever the season or holiday may be. Her greatest joy came from the time she spent with her grandchildren. In addition to her husband, she is survived by a daughter Sherri (Barry) Shields of Summerville, PA; sons William “Bill” (Beth) Gaston of Reynoldsville, PA; Michael “Mike” (Becky) Gaston of Brookville; a brother Daniel Deemer of Colorado and a sister Mona Harriger. She is also survived by 8 grandchildren: Heather Ceriani, Jacob Gaston, Matthew Gaston, Joel Gaston, Nikki Cornelius, Hailey Shields, Kayla Gaston and Lucas Gaston and 5 great grandchildren. In addition to her parents she is also preceded in death by brothers Richard and Blair Deemer, a sister Mary Lou and an infant sister. All Services for Hazel will be private at the convenience of the family.
