George Miller Obituary

 

George M. Miller, age 91 of Brockway, PA passed away peacefully on Saturday, August, 7, 2021 at Christ The King Manor, DuBois, PA after a short illness. 

Born on October 30, 1929 , in McMurray, PA, he was the son of Archie and Pansy (Wood) Miller. He married Lois Wise on March 3, 1951 who survives.

After high school graduation, he attended Penn State University and received his B.S. degree in Agriculture Education and General Science and his true mission in life began as a teacher of vocational agriculture advising the young and adults in farming and conservation. In addition to his many years teaching in Brockway Area School, he owned and operated George Miller & Sons Landscaping and served as President of the Commissioners of the Pennsylvania Game Commission. 

His organizational leaderships and memberships in Pennsylvania were all  inclusive of conservation and preservation of fish, watersheds, forests, wildlife, habitat, and agriculture (FFA). He was honored and recognized for his passion in all fields of nature and development by numerous organizations. There are too many to mention in his lifetime of service with the exception of his founding interest in the creation of the 18 mile Clarion-Little Toby Trail (Rails to Trails) developed from Ridgway (Elk County) to Brockway (Jefferson County), Pennsylvania fulfilling enjoyment of hundreds of outdoor trail enthusiasts. 

He was a true teacher beyond that of his education. He encouraged countless people to become involved and taught them how to pursue their interests and development through his methods of inspiration that transcended naturally onto his students and cohorts. His personal interests included bee keeping,  artistry in painting, glider piloting, fly fisherman, fly tying, wood carving, archeology, potter, singer (Village Voices), atlatl enthusiast, knapping arrow-heads, tree grafting and hunting. 

Those surviving in addition to his wife of 70 years are three sons, Bruce (Shelly) Miller of Brockway, Gary (Linda) Miller of Brookville, David (Lisa) Miller of Brockway, four daughters, Susan (Jim) DeSantis of Brockway, Sandra Segalia of DuBois, Rebecca Miller of Brockway, Lisa (Dan) Andrulonis of Lebanon, PA, a sister Pauline Wagner of Pittburgh, PA, numerous nieces and nephews, 19 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren, 1 great great grandchild, 2 additional great grandchildren and 1 great great grandchild expected. 

In addition to his parents, he is also preceded in death by an infant daughter , Kathleen. 

Public visitation will be held Tuesday, August 10, 2021 from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Carlson-Shugarts Funeral Home Inc. 1033 4th Avenue Brockway, PA 15824. Funeral services to be held Wednesday, August 11, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Tobias Catholic Church , Msgr. Charles Kaza officiating. Memorials in George Miller’s name may be made to Clarion-Little Toby Creek Rails to Trails, P.O. Box 115 Ridgway, PA 15853, or Brockway Area Historical Society, P.O. Box 73 Brockway, PA 15824
