Mary Scarnati Obituary

Mary Monica Scarnati of Brockway, PA died at her residence on Saturday, October 20, 2018, after a brief illness.  She was 96 years old.  Mary was born in DuBois, PA on July 2, 1922, to Anthony B. Matulis and Anna Agnes Jausinkas Matulis.  She married Francis J. Scarnati in DuBois on July 20, 1946.  They were married for 47 years prior to his death in January 1994.  She was the last living member of her family and was preceded in death by her brothers Joseph A. Matulis, Cleveland, OH and Leonard Matulis, Niagara Falls, NY, as well as her sisters, Jane Foradori and Anna A. Baker, both of DuBois, PA, and her foster sister, Adele Waylonis Makufka, of Ebensburg, PA.  From the early 60’s to the mid 80’s, Mary was well-known and sought out in the area for her beautiful wedding cakes.  During those years, she created 307 wedding and anniversary cakes, as well as over 1,200 birthday, graduation, and other special occasion cakes.  She was a member of St. Tobias Catholic Church in Brockway and was a member of the Rosary Society.  She spent many years lending her talents to decorating the St. Tobias Church during the Easter and Christmas holidays, often enlisting whichever of her children happened to be visiting home, and in later years, she was assisted by her dear friend Sylvia Verne.  She enjoyed sewing, shopping, crossword puzzles, and political discourse.  She had great wit, a fantastic memory, and was fiercely independent.  Left behind to celebrate her wealth of years, but to mourn and miss her dearly, are her children:  John F. Scarnati of Brockway, PA; Thomas M. (Veronica) Scarnati of Monterrey, Mexico; MaryAnn (Richard) Lewis of Erie, PA; Kathie Sickeri of DuBois, PA; Joseph M. Scarnati of Brockway, PA; Susan (Jeff) Cathcart of Peachtree City, GA; and Rita Scarnati of Erie, PA.  She also leaves 13 grandchildren:  Gina and Beth Scarnati; Daniel, Rafael and Sebastian Scarnati; David and Matthew Lewis; JoAnne Sickeri; Brett, Ashley and Olivia Cathcart; and Brianne and Meredith Lilly; as well as six great-grandchildren.  Mary also leaves her dear friends:  Sylvia Verne, Paula Hart, Bob and Kim Greco & family, and Renee Magee.  Funeral arrangements will be under the direction of the Carlson-Shugarts Funeral Home, Brockway.  Calling hours will be Thursday, October 25, from 1:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.; a vigil service will be conducted at 6:45 p.m. at the funeral home.  Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday, October 26, at 10:00 a.m., at St. Tobias Catholic Church, Brockway.  Burial will follow at St. Tobias Cemetery.  Memorials may be made to Brockway Area Ambulance, P.O. Box 222, Brockway, PA 15824 or the St. Tobias Flower Fund.
