Nancy Tippin George

Nancy Jane Tippin George, age 80 a long time Horizon Drive Brockway, PA; resident, currently a resident at Christ the King Manor in DuBois, PA; died on Thursday March 16, 2017 at the Manor. Born on July 31, 1936 in Clarion, PA she was the daughter of the late Waldo S. and Helen Bradshaw Tippin. On January 17, 1958 she was married to Allen R. “Al” George in the Clarion Presbyterian Church by the Rev. Roy C. Blair, and Al preceded her in death on December 6, 2014. Nancy started to work at the G.C. Murphy Store in Clarion at the age of 15. She was a 1954 graduate of the Clarion High School, and in 1958 she graduated from the Clarion State Teachers College with a degree in Elementary Education. Nancy began her career in the Keystone School District teaching 4th grade. She then  taught  3rd through 9th grade homebound instruction for the Mercer and West Middlesex Schools from 1958 to 1969. In 1970 Nancy and Al moved to Brockway and she enrolled in what now is Clarion University and obtained her Masters Degree in Education, and her Reading Specialist Certification. She then taught in the DuBois School District, primarily at the C.G. Johnson Elementary School  as a Reading Specialist for 25 years from 1971 until her retirement in 1996. Nancy was a  member of the Presbyterian Church in Brockway and was active in the church life. She was also active in Presbyterian Church’s in Clarion and Mercer. She was instrumental in starting nurseries at two locations, and at Brockway she served as the director of Christian Education, Sunday School Teacher, Adult and Youth Choir Director, Advisor for Christian Endeavor, Director of Church Pageants and President of the Women’s Association. She also served on the Board of Trustees, President and Secretary of the Sunday School Class and also served as a church Elder. During her college years she was member of the Sigma Sigma Sigma Sorority and enjoyed participating in the Drama Club. Nancy also was a member of the PSI Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma, an honorary teacher’s society. She also was a member of the Laurel and Keystone State Reading Councils. Nancy is survived by 2 daughters: Syndria Sue (Edward) Lowe of McDonald, PA; Crystal Cay (John) Averill of DuBois, PA; and 1 grandson Ian (Christine) Lowe of College Station, TX. She is also survived by 1 niece and 3 nephews. In addition to her parents and her husband she is also preceded in death by a brother W. Samuel Tippin Jr. and her step mother Marjorie H. Tippin. Calling hours will be on Sunday, March 19 from 4:00 to 8:00 PM at the Carlson-Shugarts Funeral Home Inc. 1033 4th Avenue Brockway, PA 15824. A Memorial Service will be held on Monday, March 20 at 11:00 AM at the Presbyterian Church in Brockway with Rev. Christopher McCloskey officiating. Burial will be in the Clarion Cemetery.
